Duda/Paine Architects is a design-focused firm that is conceptually driven by a deep-seated ethos devoted to client aspirations, environmental responsibility and human activity. The firm's philosophical approach inspires unexpected connections and creative insights that result in appropriate physical expression, memorable spaces and resilient continuity.
"We pay close attention to the client's program, from the spatial needs and goals, to restrictions and budget. But we also read between the lines and look for the poetic essence of a project. We know that this is why we, as design architects, have been chosen. We take that responsibility seriously." -Turan Duda, AIA
In its inaugural year, Duda/Paine won its first national design competition for the master plan and architectural design for Gateway Village Technology Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. The firm's remarkable debut has evolved into an award-winning practice offering a comprehensive and international portfolio replete with more than two-hundred design commissions, ranging from entire city and institutional master plans, cultural arts complexes, high-rise developments and corporate headquarters, to small-scale signature projects and commercial revitalizations.
Turan Duda, AIA and Jeffrey Paine, AIA founded Duda/Paine Architects in 1997 after nearly two decades of previous architectural experience as former Senior Associates of Cesar Pelli and Associates in New Haven, Connecticut. Their rigorous professional background instilled a deep-rooted conviction for conjuring big, game-changing ideas and achieving extraordinary results. As Duda/Paine, Turan and Jeff have surrounded themselves with like-minded people and collaborative teams who share their reverence for design and value the high-level of trust their clients expect. In fact, choosing clients and team members over building types or project budgets has proven to be a successful characteristic trait. As the firm has grown and matured, this approach has remained consistent and meaningful.
Duda/Paine is known for its esteemed reputation and global prestige. Individual project teams remain active participants throughout construction administration, retaining learned information and maintaining design objectives. A collaborative network of specialized consultants allows the firm to engage a wide range of project types, human scales and complex programs - all while maintaining personal attention to every detail.
Duda/Paine continues to evolve its mission and its outreach. A new satellite office, established in 2008 in Dalian, China, has expanded the firm's global client base and allowed a cultural exchange through sharing design expertise and environmental research. The complexities of explosive growth, social transformation, environmental responsibility and communal heritage are monumental issues to undertake. And, while the intended result is a new paradigm in urban planning, a carbon neutral lifestyle and civic pride - the process remains practical and worthwhile: explore, invent, engage.
Duda/Paine upholds the value of creating memorable destinations; civic spaces that serve as the collective heart of a private domain, regardless of scale. We understand the fundamental alliance between built form and open space, between streetscape and skyline and between people and place. Our process is three-fold:
Good questions beget good answers and each study poses new questions. Collectively, these questions map the evolution of a greater idea. Each inquiry weighs the balance between building and environment, program and site, investment and cost, sustainability and feasibility. Our process for multiple design investigations provide better communication with our client, accelerates our decision-making process, and streamlines our collaboration with our consultant team.
Duda/Paine refrains from preconceived ideas or prescribed formulas that codify an architectural style. The limitations of a given program, site, and budget, combined with our clients' aspirations help generate our artful approach to architectural identity. Our rigorous yet custom design approach inspires unexpected connections and creative insights that result in a fitting physical expression and memorable spaces. Likewise, we customize our project teams and delivery methods to meet specific project needs.
The ability to forge strong working relationships is essential to great design. Our team encourages active collaboration and consciously works toward communal ownership and clear consensus. Our process, while efficient and organized, exceeds simple selection or rejection of a specific scheme. Only when we achieve clear consensus and meet or exceed the project objectives do we proceed to the next level of development. Turan Duda considers careful client attention as central to inspired design:
"We work to express clients' visions - including who they are and who they want to be. Because institutions must continually redefine themselves, our reasoning has resonated with corporate, government, and university leaders. Our final designs become far more nuanced, layered, and meaningful because we get to know our client and their culture very well."

We believe that sustainable design is smart, integrated design and that our environmental practices are inseparable from our overall design process. We practice basic environmental principles determined by the nature of the building site, its topography and daylight opportunities, construction waste management, and compatible building systems. We integrate these basic principles with innovative performance such as: passive cooling, natural ventilation, daylight management, energy technology, recycled and repurposed materials, life-cycle cost analysis and green roof technology. The result is maximum energy efficiency, improved worker productivity, and minimal environmental impact.
Our process for environmental integration includes a series of on-site Sustainable Design Workshops which identify opportunities, determine goals, and evaluate preferred materials. Our goal is to engage our client and consultant team to understand initial cost impact vs. life-cycle performance and aesthetic preferences vs. maintenance requirements. The results help guide the Project Team's evaluation of building materials, insulation values, daylight performance, and ease of service. These principles become part of the project vision statement and help guide design priorities throughout the process.
The ability for Duda/Paine Architects to forge alliances outside our firm comes from fostering relationships inside our firm. Nearly one third of our staff have been with us since founding the firm in 1997 and more than half have been with us for longer than five years. When add new people to this seasoned core, we carefully consider the dynamics of each new relationship.
We expect every member of our firm to bring a rigorous educational background coupled with strong design talent and documentation skills. Our team-based success depends on positive working relationships, organization, and clear communication. We prefer that our architectural staff be proficient with 'BIM' technology, specifically Revit, in addition to other model and graphic programs such as Sketchup, 3-D Max, and Adobe Design Standard.
In exchange, we provide a collaborative studio environment, flexible work stations, state-of-the-art technology, an industrial arts workshop, and material research. We offer a competitive and comprehensive package of compensation benefits, AIA/CES continuing education opportunities, and professional memberships.
We value personal experiences, strengths, and personalities that will enrich our firm. To this end, we provide opportunities for our staff to explore their talents, invent new opportunities, and engage their skills. Often, they discover new ones.
Our Director of Human Resources receives portfolios daily and reviews each one with our partners, whether we are actively hiring or not. We invite you to write and tell us about your strengths, expertise, and interests.
