Process

Duda|Paine Architects believes the design process and the buildings we create are most influenced by the people involved. We discover how people learn, work, collaborate and gather and help them function better through our buildings. We also understand what makes individuals and communities thrive and continuously explore emerging trends and test new solutions to contemporary challenges.

Our team works as a single, fully integrated studio of thinkers

who approach every challenge with intelligence, insight and open minds. All our work benefits from a continuous exchange of ideas between projects and markets. This allows us to design many different types of projects and discover elements that crossover between building functions. The resulting architecture is more responsive to use, context and evolving ways of living, healing, learning and working.

We believe our connection to the natural world elevates a shared sense of belonging and advances wellbeing for everyone. Working in our local communities and on national and international projects has propelled us to develop a higher sensitivity to ecology, climate and the regional biosystem everywhere we work. We all have a responsibility to take care of the environment and to integrate sustainability and energy efficiency into our work.

The process of making architecture is accelerating, yet our process for designing and delivering work remains consistent and forward moving. Our team begins every project by connecting a project’s fundamental ideas with those involved in its planning, programming and design.

We create an interactive and collaborative ecosystem that involves both face-to-face meetings, work sessions and digital technologies. Each part of this process comes together to ensure all disciplines are involved, engaged and coordinated.

We seek that point of common understanding and, once we find it, we nurture it. Common understanding makes us better at setting standards of practice, delivering projects, meeting schedules and budgets, and listening to clients.

Creating architecture is more a social act than an individual artistic activity. We encourage every designer to say what they think and ask, what are we missing? In our world, "it takes a village" to produce great architecture.

We all have a responsibility to take care of the environment and to integrate sustainability and energy efficiency into our work. Adaptable layouts, conscientious material selection, efficient systems and flexible equipment and furnishings can respond to changing user needs—all these are common sense strategies that translate into timeless, sustainable and resilient buildings.

Our cohesive way of working and sharing ideas, which is progressing with technology, unifies us. Devoting time to exploring alternatives and testing solutions makes for shared decision making. We each have a stake in the work and its evolution.
