The master plan for the Technology Center at Gateway Village envisioned the revitalization of a neglected area west of Charlotte’s main downtown corridor. The project’s centerpiece is the Technology Center, a complex of three office buildings with street-level shops, gardens and a courtyard promenade— an expansive public space at the heart of the complex. To encourage downtown’s transformation into a hub of live-work-play activity, the design provides for the 24-hour operations of a technology and call-center workforce around a vibrant, outdoor public space. A central core of gardens, plazas, paths and open-air atria throughout the fifteen-acre site connects housing units, offices, shops and parking. The Promenade has become Charlotte’s most desirable location for festivals, charity fund-raisers, and concerts.
