UNCSA envisioned a building to welcome visitors and provide new students a ceremonial gateway to this nationally prominent school for the visual and performing arts. The design conveys the school’s creative vitality and mission, while setting an aesthetic standard for future campus development. Varied surface treatments express the different functions across the building’s public face and the more private anterior length, where the administrative offices are housed. Movement around and through the architecture presents an unfolding sequence of experiences beginning with the lantern-like main entrance and episodic glimpses of artwork through playfully placed openings, to the quieter conference center that anchors the building’s administrative end. The tall, open reception room leads to a theater. A long gallery houses projects from the school’s seven disciplines.
