Dimensional Place
Charlotte, North Carolina
The integration of a 7-story tower into the historic South End of Charlotte transformed an undeveloped site into a much-needed mixed-use neighborhood center. At street level, the building’s red sandstone base steps back to allow public space at each of its three corners: the large public Art Plaza, the more intimate Landing Spot, and the Festival Square for events and celebrations. Each space emerged from a master planning and community engagement process focused on bringing new life and activity to the area.
The design advances the natural evolution of a growing urban district saturated with residential buildings by providing much-needed live/work/play amenities along Charlotte’s light rail corridor. The tower’s glass and sandstone material palette is accented with metal and brick to present a strong, yet distinctly contemporary profile amidst the area’s existing warehouse structures. A 30-foot-tall grand lobby with organic and artistic furnishings and finishes opens to the Art Plaza, which is flanked by community-focused retail spaces. Two floors of below-ground parking provide space for 665 cars.
