North Carolina State University’s four-story Talley Student Union features a 150-ft tall steel structure dubbed the Technology Tower. Fabricated of architecturally exposed structural steel, the tower represents the school’s commitment to science, technology, engineering and math education. To prepare for excavating the student union’s subterranean loading dock, crews first installed 20-ft-deep soil nails to underpin the foundation of a nearby dormitory. Construction totaled 299,000 sq ft, with 149,000 sq ft of addition and a 150,000-sq-ft renovation.
