HUB RTP Master Plan

Durham, North Carolina

RTP Park Center is neither an urban or suburban place – it is in-between – where people and ideas come together in a community without borders. It is a series of neighborhoods driven by landscape and technology to facilitate creation and collaboration. With each neighborhood, distinct identities converge to define the future. Built form interconnects with nature, while views bring inner insight, art merges with industry, so that technology is what fuels the future. Park Center’s aspiration is to shape a new, primary, and enduring North Carolina connection point from two primary harmonizers: ideas and nature.

Guiding Principals

The RTP Park Center Guiding Principles planning document furthers the original vision of Research Triangle Park (RTP) founders, who sought to shape a place where research communities could come together and invent the future. The new document creates a foundational “spirit book” that defines objectives for architects, designers, developers, residents and tenants as they shape future RTP building projects on the 100-acre campus. Its guidelines bring definition to the process of creating spaces that foster and further a future of innovation and technological progress and bring employment and educational opportunities to the area.

More a design framework than a prescribed set of standards, the document aids the over-laying of individuality, identity, brand and character for businesses and research enterprises, reflecting a planning thought process intended to serve multiple authors and to allow individual expression over time within a larger whole.
